Ralph Eschenbach: Ensuring a Future for the Redwoods

Ralph and Carol Eschenbach

By Save the Redwoods Legacy supporter Ralph Eschenbach

One of my earliest redwood memories was at Muir Woods with my dad, when he took my family out there when we were kids. These massive trees were awe-inspiring to me even back then.

Now, I go out to the redwoods with my wife, Carol Provan. When we're surrounded by their majesty, we can take a breath and forget about the hustle of our day-to-day lives, even for just a moment. Both mental and physical ills can be alleviated by a walk among the redwoods. The peace and tranquility make them a real special spot in the world for us. We even have 40-50 redwoods on our property—we estimate they're anywhere from 150 to 200 years old.

Carol and I have been lucky enough to travel extensively and explore many of the great forests of the world. And while we've marveled at the natural beauty we encounter on our travels, we keep coming back to the redwoods as perhaps the most inspiring of all the forests we have visited—forests that are literally in our own backyard!

We've got some of the best forests in the world right here in California. Save the Redwoods League has a long history of doing excellent conservation work, and they're committed to getting future generations involved in stewarding these gentle giants. That's one of the reasons I'm so excited to support the League's work, in particular, why we have chosen to leave a legacy gift to the League — to ensure these magnificent forests remain healthy and accessible for future generations!

We never cease to be amazed by the redwoods when we go out hiking and backpacking, and it is so amazing to have them so close to us. We need to keep it that way, especially for future generations to enjoy their beauty.
